The celebration of World Standards Day brings communities and people together to address some of the biggest challenges facing our world, including poverty, inequality and climate change. International standards play an important role in turning the global goals into action by providing shared guidelines, knowledge and best practices that help governments, businesses, organisations and communities work together to improve quality and safety and develop sustainable solutions. Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals requires cooperation across borders and participation from everyone. By understanding and applying international standards, we can contribute to positive change, live in a world that is fair, safe, & healthy, support innovation, and help build a more sustainable, inclusive and resilient future for people and the planet.
World Standards Day
A celebration which is a means of “paying tribute” to the collaborative efforts of thousands of experts worldwide who develop the voluntary technical agreements that are published as International Standards.
14 October is World Standards Day, a day when we recognise how international standards help make our world safer, fairer and more sustainable.
International standards are shared ways of doing things that help countries, organisations and businesses work together. They can help make the technology we use safer, products more reliable, services more accessible, and solutions to global challenges more sustainable.
This is why the theme of World Standards Day is “A Shared Vision for a Better World.” It reminds us that creating a better future is something we all have a role in. When people around the world share knowledge, work together and follow common standards, we can turn ideas into practical solutions that benefit everyone.
International Standards:
International standards developed by ISO, IEC and ITU help countries and communities turn the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into real-world action. Created by thousands of experts from around the world, these standards bring together global knowledge, experience and best practices to help make the products and services we use safer, more sustainable, reliable and effective.
International Standards represent a global agreement on the latest knowledge, technology and expertise. Together with conformity assessment, they help support the things that matter in our everyday lives—from safety and security to energy efficiency, sustainability and international trade. In simple terms, international standards help people, organisations and countries work together with confidence to create a safer, more connected and sustainable future.
